Soprano-size uke with a polymer body. It’s the custom K2-SR from Ortega. Great for travel and picnics. First, for it’s size and second, for the weather-resistant characteristics of the ABS polymer body.
One of a series of six, each with it’s own strange and unusual theme. This, the Samurai, my favorite of the bunch. Comes with Aquila strings and a nice accessory kit that includes Tuner, Strap and five-piece pick set.
I love the odd shape of the head stock and overall “look” of this oddity. Was very surprised by the sound, fit and finish overall. As soprano ukes go, this is loud and bright.
The molded polymer back has a tooth to it, it’s textured nicely to ensure it won’t slide off your lap while playing, won’t slip out of your hands while carrying and handling. This is practically the perfect travel uke. I keep one of these in my trunk for fast retrieval and emergencies (is there such thing as a uke emergency?). Strap button installed as well, nice little extra touch.
Comes with a drawstring pouch, suitable for airplane carry-on. I did buy a padded gig bag but for most people, the included pouch is more than sufficient.
Having brought this on a few trips, sat around a few campfires with it, and shown it off at Open Mics, I can attest to it’s worthiness as an ideal Travel Uke. I haven’t tried one of their Pocket Ukes yet, but plan on doing so sometime soon. In the meantime, this is my default, go-to Travel Instrument, it’s been worth every penny.
They also make a series of Pocket Ukes, the K1 class. Available in a variety of colors / styles. Ortega makes many interesting ukulele products.
